Featured Project – Family Martial Arts Centre Fit Out

A Project Built Around Community, Wellbeing & Purpose

Towards the end of 2021, following one of the most challenging periods many businesses had faced during the global pandemic, we were approached with an exciting opportunity — to design and build a brand-new martial arts family centre.

This wasn’t simply another commercial fit out project. The vision was to create a welcoming, family-focused training facility designed not only around martial arts and fitness, but around community, wellbeing, confidence, and personal development.

The brief was clear:
Create a modern, functional training environment with maximum usable space, open viewing areas for families, accessible facilities, and a warm, inviting atmosphere that people genuinely enjoyed spending time in.

Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity.

Planning The Space

Before any construction began, we worked closely with the people who would actually use the facility day in and day out — instructors, students, families, visitors, and prospective members.

This collaborative approach gave us invaluable insight into how the space needed to function in real life. It allowed us to carefully plan practical features such as:

  • Disabled access and facilities
  • Changing rooms and shower areas
  • Open viewing spaces
  • Efficient training layouts
  • Safe movement throughout the building
  • Comfortable communal areas

By understanding the needs of the people using the centre, we were able to create a layout that balanced practicality, atmosphere, and functionality.

Bringing The Vision To Life

Armed with drawings, measurements, and plenty of determination, we began transforming the empty commercial unit into a fully functioning martial arts hub.

One of the first stages involved setting out the entire layout in timber directly onto the floor. This allowed us to accurately visualise room sizes, circulation space, and the positioning of key facilities before construction fully began.

Working around existing structural steel columns within the unit presented additional challenges, but rather than treating them as obstacles, we incorporated them into the overall design to maximise usable space and maintain a clean, open feel throughout the centre.

Once the final layout was approved, construction moved quickly. Walls and ceilings were erected, followed by first-fix electrical and plumbing works before the entire space was plasterboarded, skimmed, and prepared for finishing.

At this stage, the project truly began to take shape — and the response from both the client and visitors was incredible.

Bespoke Features & Specialist Finishes

Beyond the main construction works, we also delivered a range of bespoke joinery and custom-built features throughout the facility, including:

  • A handcrafted reception desk
  • Custom shoe storage solutions
  • Space-saving pocket door systems
  • A bespoke entertainment/media wall
  • Decorative moss feature wall with integrated TV installation

The training areas themselves required extensive safety matting installation across floors, walls, and structural columns, all carefully integrated into the final design and finish of the space.

To complete the project, extensive decorating works were carried out to create a clean, modern, and professional environment suitable for both training and family use.

A Project We’re Proud To Have Been Part Of

As the project came to completion, the sense of achievement throughout everyone involved was incredible.

This was more than just a commercial fit out — it became a collaborative project between tradespeople, instructors, students, families, and the wider community, all working together to create something genuinely meaningful.

The completed dojo later gained recognition through features on both BBC News and ITV News, highlighting the positive impact the centre was having within the community.

The coverage focused not only on martial arts and self-defence training, but also on the centre’s commitment to mental health, confidence building, self-discipline, positivity, and wellbeing for people of all ages.

Being trusted to help bring that vision to life is something we remain incredibly proud of, and it’s a project that perfectly represents the passion, teamwork, and attention to detail we bring to every build.
